CHME458 – Corrosion Protecion in Oil and Gas Industry

Course description

This course is designed for undergraduate engineering students and engineers, and will cover aspects of corrosion theory and practice, including theories of electrochemical and non-electrochemical corrosion, underground and practical application of various corrosion protection techniques specific for oil & gas industry. Basic aspects of design and engineering for corrosion prevention will be discussed.

Course Pre-Requisites: CHME222

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Describe the concepts and theory of corrosion.
  2. Apply the theory of corrosion for practical purposes.

Course Outline

In this course students will learn about: the importance of corrosion in the oil and gas industries; electrochemical corrosion theory and its thermodynamics; kinetics of electrochemical cells; electrochemical corrosion protection, such as cathodic and anodic protection; materials selection for corrosion protection; effect of process parameters in corrosion, such as high temperatures; practical applications of corrosion protection.
