PROGRAMS

Course description

This course is designed for both undergraduate and graduate engineering students and engineers, and will cover aspects of the electrochemical cell (EC), its theory and applications; major industrial electrochemical processes (electrolytic production of metals, corrosion protection and batteries). This course will also enable students to gain hands on experience in experiments in corrosion protection, batteries, fuel cells and electrolysis.

Course Pre-Requisites: CHME222

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Design relevant systems and processes though obtained knowledge.
  2. Applying electrochemical calculations and experimental skills for related industrial and research tasks.
  3. Develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgement to draw conclusions.

Course Outline

In this course students will learn about: theory of electrochemistry including its thermodynamics; electrodes and cell potentials; galvanic cells; mass transfer processes in galvanic cells; principles of electrolysis and electroplating, including Farady's law; introduction to advanced energy storage and conversion systems, such as batteries; fuel cells; industrial design of electrochemical processes and batteries, such as automotive batteries.
