NU Open Day 2022: SEDS became the center of attraction for all guests
On September 25, Nazarbayev University hosted its first in-person Open House Day since the beginning of the pandemic. The event was attended by about 5,500 guests, including high school students who got their first glimpse of university life.
The NU School of Engineering and Digital Sciences (NU SEDS), following the American engineer Henry Petroski’s famous quote, “Science is about knowing, engineering is about doing,” located in the atrium and showcased its engineering achievements. The program for future students consisted of two parts. The first part was a fair of the six departments of the School. In addition to the engineering achievements of professors, student projects under the motto “Stars of SEDS” were presented there.
A variety of fascinating devices, from which it was impossible to tear your eyes, made SEDS the center of attraction for visitors throughout the event.
NU SEDS presented over 30 unique devices for guests to touch and even learn to operate.
Of particular interest were the humanoid robots, the K-SLARS system of automatic recognition of Kazakh sign language, a tactile robot, augmented reality glasses for industrial safety, and an electric wheelchair for people with disabilities.
Gait Exoskeleton system, Dynamic Wireless Charging of Electric Car and energy-generating bicycle also won attention.
The educational-laboratory devices of the Chemical and materials engineering department also enjoyed extraordinary popularity.
Among the guests were those who wanted to try working on a welding simulator.
Did not remain without attention web-tuner for Kazakh national instruments “Dombyra Tuner.”
For the first time, a racing car, “SunQar” assembled by the hands of SEDS students, was presented to the public.
School professors consulted with prospective students and their families on the academic programs of their departments, entry requirements, and the process of studying at NU SEDS.
Current students from the School, who represented various student organizations, shared their experiences.
The second part of the SEDS program for the Open House Day consisted of various informative and entertaining activities. A 15-minute musical performance by the Engineering Student Orchestra gave the guests of the event vivid emotions and a festive mood. The students played famous masterpieces of Kazakh national music. Professor Mariza Tsakarelou and her students organized a master class called “How to innovate – create new products and services by expanding your thinking with seven simple steps.” Also, all guests had an opportunity to visit the School’s laboratories during the event. Tours of 6 different laboratories of the School received whole sign-ups gathered every 30 minutes. The game lovers participated in the game contest, SEDSHUNT. The top 10 players who collected SEDS coins the fastest were awarded souvenirs of the School at the end of the event.
