International Symposium on Emerging Materials and Devices (ISEMD) was held on December 13-15

On December 13rd of 2021 was hosted the International Symposium on Emerging Materi-als and Devices (ISEMD) by both Advanced Functional Materials Device (AFMD) Lab (Nazarbayev University) and Advanced Solar Energy Materials & Systems (ASEMS) Lab (National Laboratory Astana, Nazarbayev University). The ISEMD conference lasted for three days and each day had three sessions including morning, afternoon and evening ses-sions, where professors from all over the world delivered lectures covering various topics. Each session was chaired by Professors.

The Symposium started on December 13rd of 2021 with opening speech given by Dr. Adesida, Provost of Nazarbayev University and a member of US National Academy of En-gineering. Subsequently, Dr. Surya, Former vice provost of Nazarbayev University, gave a welcome talk representing international organizing committee. The very first morning ses-sion was chaired by Prof. Nuraje, head of both AFMD Lab and ASEMS lab. The first key note lecture «Living Bioelectrochemical Composites» was delivered by Prof. Guillermo Carlos from National University of Singapore.
Participants took part from the USA, Canada, Singapore, South Korea, Russia, China, Spain and Kazakhstan. Although the lectures has lasted till the time already mid-night, participa-tors has been with high interest and asked the great questions.

Here are some feedbacks from the participants of ISEMD 2021 Conference:

«I would like to share my feedback on the conference. Everyone presented exceptional contributions to the issues of contemporary science and engineering. It was indeed thought-provoking, especially the session with Prof. Ki Su Kim. His non-invasive ap-proach in treating wounds, and antibacterial therapy was impressive. Moreover, Prof. Guillermo Carlos Bazan’s research to generate bioelectricity utilizing composite materials was also an attractive part of the conference.
Furthermore, other participants shared the attractive properties and applications of differ-ent materials in their research areas. It broadens my view of thinking, and I suggest these types of conferences should be conducted on a regular basis. It will not only help to think about current research areas but also guide to keep pace with future research».

«Thank you for hosting this amazing conference for us. This was the first international symposium I have attended in the master program, so I was really excited about it.
The conference included professors from many countries, and they shared their newest findings in the chemical materials, biology, medicine and physics area. Prof. Nurxat Nuraje is the host in first day and gave his talk in the second day, which is about conductive polymer materials simple and understandable. And professor Sarkyt Kudaibergenov gave us a talk about polyampholytes, which is very helpful to my research project. He started from basic common knowledge and went slowly deep, then introduced the various appli-cations about polyampholytes. And also Prof.Guo in the last day, his speech inspired me to use the new oxidant materials to use in polyaniline synthesis, which is the embarrassment that stucks my process.
For the improvement of next year’s symposium, I suggest that we should have a longer Q&A section, and maybe need to sort the presentations that have similar themes together. At the same time, I think we should ask more master PHD students in NU to join, because only 4 out of 19 classmates attended.
Thanks again for the effort you put in and I really want to join next years’ symposium ;)»

«Thank you for inviting me to such a well-organized conference. For me, the conference brought a lot of ideas. Especially Professor Sarkyt Kudaibergenov’s work was very close. Thank you so much for seeing professors from all over the world giving presentations. May there be more such conferences in the future. Many thanks to the organizers».

«First of all, I would like to appreciate the conference organisers. It was an excellent op-portunity for us to hear world-class researchers. All invited speakers were impressive from the research side as well as with their personal qualities. As an aspiring researcher in pol-ymer sciences, I was particularly impressed by the lectures by Prof Zhanhu Guo and Prof Ramazan Asmatulu. Their work inspired me to new ideas and encouraged me to work harder. I hope that such conferences will become a tradition, and we will be able to hear such lectures in the coming years».
