Nazarbayev University School of Engineering and Digital Sciences (SEDS) invites you to attend the seminar The Introduction of Advanced Technology into Prosthetics by Professor Peter Kyberd, Head of School of Energy & Electronic Engineering, University of Portsmouth, UK

Moderator of the seminar: Professor Prashant Jamwal, Associate professor, Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, SEDS NU

Date: June 2, Wednesday
Time: 14:00-15:00

Abstract: We are now used to seeing high tech aids for people with physical impairments, but this is a recent phenomenon.  Prosthetic limbs have a long history, but for the majority of time the limbs were simple mechanical devices to replace a single function.  The first microprocessor was produced in 1971 and the rise of microprocessors began from the late 1970s, it began to revolutionize computers and other electronic systems from that date.  However, the first clinically deployed prosthetic limb was in 1989, in Southampton, UK and the first commercial prosthetic knee was produced by Chas Blatchfords in the mid-1990s.

This talk will outline the progress of prosthetic limbs and discuss why they were more slowly introduced in this field than many others.
