Mehdi Bagheri received the Ph.D. degree in electrical power engineering and energy systems from the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Sydney, Australia. He has been with the Electrical Engineering Department at Electric Machines and Drives Laboratory (EMDL) of National University of Singapore (NUS) and also worked closely with the Rolls-Royce Pte. Ltd., Singapore, on “Condition Monitoring and Predictive Maintenance Systems”. He is currently an Associate Professor with the School of Engineering and Digital Sciences, Nazarbayev University (NU), Astana, Kazakhstan. Dr. Bagheri is currently an Associate Editor with the IEEE Access Journal and the journal of Frontiers in Energy Research, Senior Member of IEEE, a member of the IEEE Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation (DEIS), IEEE Power and Energy (PES) and IEEE Industrial Electronics Societies, National Research Council member of Kazakhstan, and also the head of Smart Energy Solutions Laboratory. He also has published more than 180 journals and conference papers, and conducted more than 50 industrial short course trainings in condition monitoring and predictive maintenance for oil, gas, and petrochemical industries, and transmission and distribution companies. He is the PI and co-PI in different research projects, published one book and one book chapter, and also patent holder in smart monitoring systems. His research interests include intelligent methods for energy and power systems, smart city, renewable energy forecasting, internet of energy (IoE), electric vehicles and wireless charging, diagnosis in energy systems for off- and onshore applications, electrical rotating machines, transformers, power quality, and smart grid.
ABSTRACT: Climate change is one of the most pressing global issues in this century, and it has significant impacts on earth, human and natural systems. Kazakhstan, like many other countries, has recognized the importance of addressing global warming and is taking steps to reduce its impact on the environment. Green agriculture and transportation are some of those important areas where Kazakhstan is focusing its efforts to attack the subject. While presently the country is promoting sustainable farming practices that diminish the use of risky chemicals and enrichers, it is also promoting the use of renewable and sustainable energies to support green houses and farms and ultimately reduce the greenhouse gas emissions. In addition to promoting sustainable agriculture, Kazakhstan is also taking steps towards green transportation sector. The country is investing over the development of more efficient public transportation systems, such as bus rapid transit and light rail along with increasing number of electric vehicles (EVs), to reduce the number of cars on the road and lower emissions. In this seminar, we have also specifically focused to review the climate change issue and its reasons fundamentally, introduce and discuss worldwide regulations, taxes and international supports and provide Kazakhstan steps towards tackling the global warming until now, and provide our recent NU research steps in green agriculture and rail transportation system to support the alternative energies.
