Dr. Stavros G. Poulopoulos has studied Chemical Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens (Greece). He holds a Master in Process Analysis and Plant Design and a second one in the interdisciplinary field of Environment and Development. He conducted his Ph.D. research in the field of environmental protection. His research work has resulted in around seventy publications in the fields of Chemical Engineering and Environmental Science & Technology. Moreover, he is the co-author of two books published by Elsevier. He is currently associate professor in SEDS and the acting head of the Chemical and Materials Engineering Department.

ABSTRACT: The occurrence of emerging pollutants in the aquatic environment has received considerable attention by the scientific community, since these compounds may be biologically active, are usually resistant to biodegradation, and have thus the potential for accumulation and persistence in the environment. Although they appear at relatively low concentrations, they may pose a risk to ecosystems and public health. Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) have been considered as an efficient alternative for the treatment of such compounds in water. AOPs consist of a wide group of methods that include fast reaction rates and nonselective oxidation of compounds. Among various AOPs, photocatalysis is a promising method that could be used for the treatment of polluted water, especially if visible light is used as source of irradiation. In this presentation, various photocatalytic systems developed in the context of the project “Cost-Effective Photocatalysts for the Treatment of Wastewaters containing Emerging Pollutants” will be shown.
